About Hoop Convergence

Hoop Workshops * Ecstatic Dance * Forums * Performances * Labs & Jams

Hoop Convergence was the first hoop dancers’ conference gathering on the planet. For eight years, we gathered innovators, teachers, performing artists, and community ambassadors to share skills and experiences. In the process, we grew hoop dance as an art form, practice and profession. Known as HoopCON by many, this international gathering happened yearly from 2008 – 2015. After an 8 year break, we are reuniting! Expect to see pioneers of hoop dance as well as current artists and innovators.

We currently have 15 presernters confirmed with more to be added. Learn more about our presenters here

Some themes to be explored in this year’s Convergence:

Cultivating Creativity & Empowerment through Expression

Ecstatic States & Transformation

Spiraling Practices for Movement Longevity & Regeneration

Moving through Grief

Community Building through Practice

Hooping with Alternatively-abled Bodies

FlowArts PlayPen

Authentic Relating

and much more!

Whether you’ve attended every year, or this is your first time, you’re invited to join us for this multi-day movement retreat on 350 acres in the rolling hills of North Carolina. Just outside of Carrboro, Chestnut Ridge Retreat Center features open meadows, forests and a 5 acre lake. Classes are held in covered, open-air spaces.

Cabin (think summer camp!) & camping options available.

All meals are provided by the venue. They emphasize local, organic ingredients when possible and also grow and raise some of their own food. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and omnivore options available.

“A significant era of my life was profoundly guided by my hoop practice; by the flashes of insight and inspiration accessed in the flow and ecstatic states achieved inside the hoop. I am certain these movement practices  (hoop, acrobatic arts and ecstatic dance) strengthened my capacity to ground vision into form, to adapt and improvise, to find courage in the face of fear, to persist despite discomfort and to cultivate resilience. These practices have saved, shaped and enhanced my life beyond measure. Hooping helped me connect with my body and to find courage to be here on the earth. In a time when I felt a lot of despair, the hoop gave me hope. With all that’s happening in the world, this practice seems like a medicine for the moment.”

~ Julia Hartsell, Hoop Convergence founder & curator
