Pre-Samhain Ancestor Season Events
Coming together to ritually greet and repeatedly tend to the autumnal and ancestral season
In honor and observance of the threshold of ancestor season beginning or peaking in different cultural traditions, Heartward Sanctuary is excited to offer an array of events curated to prepare our psyches, spirits, and bodies for this seasonal veil thinning.
Registration for these events varies, so please read the description of each offering for more information.

Aug 31-Oct 14: Bone Casts for Ancestor Season (Ancestor Readings)

Throwing the bones is an age-old way of connecting with the unseen realms, especially the ancestors, especially while the veil is thin. Divining with a unique set of bones, stones, and curios, Julia and Djed will help you parse Spirit’s messages and identify where attention is needed or gifts wait unclaimed. Expect ritual recommendations or prescriptions to unfold from the process.
Co-facilitated by Julia & Djed. 75 minutes, $200 ($120 for sustainers).
Due to the depth and time these seasoned practitioners put into the practice, spaces are limited to 1-2/week — so if you feel called to schedule your session, send an inquiry to info@heartwardsanctuary.org.
Sept 13: Incense Making Workshop with Djed

Join Djed (co-founder of HS and nose behind Sattva Incense) for a hands-on session of from-scratch incense-making. We’ll be making ritual incense for Samhain featuring a blend of precious aromatics from every inhabited continent. Participants will have a chance to experience the materials individually before we form dough and begin shaping cones. Each participant will get to take home some incense as well as contribute cones to the Samhain ceremony on 31 October.
Dance 11 AM – 1 PM
Workshop 2 – 3:15 pm
Suggested: $25 ($15 for sustainers), registration below
Sept 20: Mabon Animal Ancestors Dance
All are welcome to join us for the Fall Equinox Ceremony to ritually turn towards the dark half of the year. We’ll honor the threshold to ancestor season by inviting in our beloved animal companions who have passed. You’re welcome to bring photos, offerings, talismans, ashes, or even old collars from your departed family members. Even if you’ve not had an animal companion, you’re welcome to join–just be ready to dance with four-leggeds (in spirit) alongside two!
10 AM: Altar Setting, Invocation, and Offerings
11 AM: Dance

Oct 17 & 24: Samhain Prep Service Saturdays
Your help in preparing the land and spaces for our biggest event of the year is greatly appreciated. Activities might include: mowing, leaf-blowing, hand-painting signage on wood, cleaning the Temple Barn, adding to stone cairns…
Each workday runs (generally) 10 AM – 2/4 PM. (Timelines, like many other things in life, are fluid : )
These prep days are wonderful opportunities to contribute to this potent ritual and connect with other community members. Folks are welcome to bring lunch and socialize afterwards.
Oct 25: Ritual Foods, Hominy Making
At Samhain, we’ll be serving a big stew made from ingredients grown at HS–corn, beans, and squash. Today we’ll be making the corn into hominy by cooking it with lye made from wood ashes. This traditional process, favored by native peoples across the Americas, improves the nutritional profile of the corn and enhances its flavor. Stick around after dance to learn how it’s done and begin the process on corn grown at Heartward over the past couple of seasons.
No charge for this informal class, which will last 30 or so minutes.
Parking
Along the right side of the driveway. Then, walk towards the barn and turn left towards the house. For those who park at the end of the driveway, we are trying to reserve these close spaces for elders and those with little ones. You can walk to either side of the house to find ritual center. Limited parking at the Sanctuary House for pre-approved persons.
