Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge the Indigenous keepers of the lands where we now live and work including the Sissipihaw, Shakori, Eno, Occaneechi and Catawba tribes. As the current stewards of this land, we recognize the painful legacies and ongoing harms of Colonialism on the Native peoples by European settlers. We recognize that our current Capitalist systems of land-ownership perpetuate various harms on our waters, land and culture and we seek to be in relationship, reciprocity and repair with Indigenous communities.

Ancestors of the Stewards

Julia’s people come from Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Scandinavia, Africa (Nigeria & other regions of W & N Africa) as well as the Cherokee Nation. Her ancestors have both harmed and been harmed by Colonialism, enslavement of African people, gender-based violence and religious fundamentalism. Her recent ancestors have been working-class farmers based in the SouthEast (NC & Georgia) for multiple centuries. Julia has been in a practice of direct relationship, learning and healing with her ancestors for a decade which has deepened her understanding of the complexities regarding ancestral entanglements and seeks to be in right relationship and repair when appropriate and possible on behalf of her blood ancestors.
