About Myth & Motion Summer Camp

Overview

Julia and Alexis are excited to launch the first Heartward Sanctuary youth summer camp this year, August 17-21. This programming has been many moons — and even years — in the making.

For context, Alexis and Julia first connected when she was 8 or 9 in summer camps that Julia offered at the Carolina Friends School, where she now works as the Lower School Dance Teacher. It’s a delightfully ‘full circle’ moment and lineage-affirming experience to collaborate with Alexis on this project.

Youth programming is an integral, though as yet under-actualized, part of Heartward’s vision of building intergenerational community that centers around embodied, animist ritual practice, ones that honor creative expression and the world’s wisdom and spiritual traditions, to support us all through the many thresholds and rites of passage life brings.

This summer, Alexis & Julia will be offering a full-length summer camp that incorporates various flow arts (e.g., hula hoop, aerial silks, poi), expressive movement practices (e.g., ecstatic dance, various kinesthetic techniques, tumbling), dramaturgy, and myth-making from around the world and spiritual diaspora to begin kids’ attunement to how they move through the world — both in a physical body, and as part of a larger network of stories and histories.

This camp is designed for kids ages 8-12; outside that range only with explicit permission.

Programming will feature a range of indoor and outdoor activities; please note that our primary space is a renovated barn and as such, is unconditioned, though has fans.

What to Bring

  • Lunch + snacks
  • Water bottle
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen + bug spray
  • Bathing suit (for sprinkler play)
  • Change of clothes
  • Closed-toed shoes + water-friendly shoes
  • Any medication your child takes
  • A favorite costume, article of clothing, mask, etc.
  • A favorite song
  • Any favorite stories or myths (can be a book, or just known)

Parking

Along the right side of the driveway. Then, walk towards the barn and turn left towards the house. For those who park at the end of the driveway, we are trying to reserve these close spaces for elders and those with little ones. You can walk to either side of the house to find ritual center. Limited parking at the Sanctuary House for pre-approved persons.

Bathrooms

Composting toilets available in the barn and flushable toilets available in the Sanctuary House.

Important Notes About Registration

When you click on the ‘Tickets’ button (above), you will be redirected to a Givebutter page to register. You will then be prompted to complete a series of questions that will help us get a sense for your child’s/children’s needs, personality, and other logistical info. Thank you for taking the time to fill this out ahead of the Myth & Motion camp!
